The Accessory Place is on Pinterest!

"Pinterest" is a fun social media site where you can find IDEAS for just about everything!

The Accessory Place has recently started "pinning" to our Pinterest account with boards focused on interior design and home decorating.

To date we have 12 different boards, 94 pins, and 100s of followers of either all 12 boards or individual boards.  It's a great way to share design ideas with our customers and friends ... our boards include Family Rooms, Kitchens, Bedrooms, Seasonal Decorating, etc.

We are following some of our vendors like Stanford Furniture and Maitland Smith, as well as, shelter magazines like Veranda, House Beautiful, and Traditional Home.

If you are not already "pinning"... you should give it a try ... there is terrifc information available from "pinners" around the world.  Maybe you are looking looking for Toy Story party planning ideas for your toddler, or Vegan brownie recipes, or Spring fashion ideas, or Home decor examples using turquoise and red (yep .. just added that today!) ... you can do a "search" and get back links to any participant or any board with references to your search terms!

It is amazing what other people have found or shared on the internet.

Going Transitional

The Accessory Place is known for our fine quality furnishings in traditional styles. We know that well-constructed, classic, traditionally styled furniture pieces offer a perfect foundation to enhance the design of your room over time.

We love that some of our manufacturers are enhancing the design details - just a bit - on some of their traditional styles to give the pieces a new look; “transitional”, it is called. via Stanford Furniture

It is quite "fashion forward" to mix classic traditionally styled furniture pieces with a little bit of a transitional flair!  This combination gives a room depth and interest.

Stanford Furniture Company has re-styled a wing back chair with more vertical, straighter lines and upholstered it in an oversized bold geometric pattern to make it look almost contemporary.

The Accessory Place - Pearson Company footstool

Pearson Company has produced a classic footstool with the form taken from an Egyptian style complete with brass animal feet but the fabric is a pastel linen embroidered all over with big bright silk flowers.

One of our most popular sofa styles is a camel back with loose cushions and we have coupled it with silk pillows that look as if they may have been stenciled in yellow-green and brown. They lighten and brighten the twill upholstery that is more of the “menswear” look.

The Accessory Place - Camel Back style sofa

The Chesterfield sofa that has been around for a couple of hundred years in English manor homes has come back in a big way... we have upholstered this one in natural linen taking it from the “old world” to the new.

The Accessory Place - Stanford Furniture "Deb" chair

Stanford has created its “Deb" chair which is a basic lounge chair with a modified wing. The clean tattersall plaid linen is coupled with traditional nailheads for a quintessential “transitional” piece.

The Accessory Place - Harden Furniture lounge chair

Harden Furniture has produced this very traditional lounge chair in a cotton fabric with a modernized lattice print. We are showing them with the Chinese print throw pillows which are light blue, gold, beige, light green, and white. It’s a traditional pattern printed in light, airy colors. The patterns and colors could be easily worked in to many existing schemes.

The Accessory Place - Light painted wood finishes

We are ordering many of our wood pieces in light painted or glazed finishes such as this 18thcentury armchair.  It is antiqued in whites and distressed with dark browns and greys. The chair cushion is a very traditional crewel embroidery, but the white and natural linen gives it a whole new look from the usual jewel tones of the past.

Even if your home has been completely furnished for some time, you may want to consult one of our designers to "re-imagine" and "re-style" some of your traditional pieces. New finishes and new upholstery fabrics can transform your room in ways you may not have thought possible!

Current Trends in the Design World

We would like to share with you some current trends in the home furnishings industry. Don’t worry… if one look doesn’t fit your taste or style, there are others that will. It is a rare opportunity that we get to start from scratch and there is usually some special element or elements in a room we don’t want to replace.

Small Changes:  Changing lamps, florals, art, window treatments, adding throw pillows, and a rug can be a good substitute for buying new furniture in many cases.  If you have chosen neutral furniture pieces to begin with this change will be even easier!

New Paint: Color is the most affordable way to freshen up and change the look and “feel” of a room.

Here are some CURRENT TRENDS to keep you moving “forward":

The Accessory Place - Lighter Color PaletteLighter colors – many with a gray base

  • Grey, blue, green tones
  • Tans in a taupe shade
  • Different shades of white on walls and furniture.

Using a variety of neutral texture is another way to update a room.

  • Sea grass rugs or textured carpet
  • Grass cloth wall coverings
  • Linens, suedes, leathers and distressed furniture.

For “we” traditional buffs… we are still seeing

  • Equestrian
  • Hunt scene
  • All sorts of tartan and hounds tooth plaids with bits of navy, camel, red and gold

The Accessory Place: Plaid Cocktail Ottoman

The Accessory Place - Animal Print Stool

Using animal prints on fabrics or accents somewhere in the room is still a nice touch.

Transitional furniture is another current trend

  • It is not the ultra “edgy” contemporary look but is not the usual traditional style either
  • It is a nice blend of both in style and fabric
  • The Accessory Place focuses on buying timeless furniture frames but occasionally uses a transitional fabric on a traditional frame or vice versa.
  • Incorporating transitional lamps, art and accessories in a traditional room also can make a room more interesting.

European and Oriental influences

  • It seems we are all traveling more than ever and are exposed to French, Italian and English décor.
  • We want to incorporate into our own homes beautiful marbles, woods, stone and still have a fascination with all things old (or that look old)
  • Oriental accessories can go a long way… they can add color, sleek lines, texture and international flair.

The Accessory Place - Mix Textures & Finishes

Metal Finishes

  • Dark iron pieces in drapery rods, light fixtures and accessories go well with distressed wood flooring and rustic beams
  • In addition  to brushed nickel and silver accessories, we are seeing a comeback on bronze and aged brass
  • Iron and bronze light fixtures and accessories are definitely “in”.
  • We are also seeing lots of gold undertones in metal and wood pieces.

The Accessory Place - Blue & White Accessories

Traditional Blue & White accessories are still showing in almost any setting.

Another trend that seems to be popular in loft living or in second homes is the “industrial” look… these pieces usually are made of metal and “rustic” wood.
